what it's like
to work for us?
It all starts with a warm welcome.
From the day you first step foot through the doors, you will be made to feel like part of Port of Middlesbrough family. After all, Port of Middlesbrough is still owned by the same family that started the business over 80 years ago, with current managing director, Gary Dawson being the founder’s grandson.
These ties to family values resonate throughout the business and are part of everything we do. This is why many colleagues have been working at the company for many years and we have an excellent staff retention rate.
We want you to have a good understanding about the company you are working for, this is why you will be given a full company induction, not only to learn about health and safety, but to learn about the history of the business, where it has come from and what the future has in store.
Safety, Integrity, Family and Resourceful are values the company stands by and actively promotes. This is integrated into everything we do as a business. This is why every new colleague will enrol on a values workshop. These workshops will give you a greater understanding of why the company has the values it does, the importance of understanding the values and what we expect from you as a colleague.
We want to see all of our colleagues reach their full potential and as you become an integral member of the team, you will also be offered further opportunities to learn and develop. This can be anything from further educational training, skills courses or shadowing other colleagues around the business. We will also review your progress and how you think you are performing, this is why you will be given a chance to sit down with your manager on a regular basis to discuss this. We also carry out yearly reviews to not only make sure you are on track, but also make sure you are happy in your role.
We want all of our colleagues to get a chance to know each other and as a diverse business operating over multiple sites this can often be quite difficult. This is why we offer a number of events, activities or social events that you can take part in – this can be anything from the annual Christmas party to taking part in a charity bike ride. You can partake in as many of these as you want, the choice is yours. When you become part of the team you will also be entitled to some exciting perks. This could be anything from discounts at high street shops and restaurants to money off holidays.
We understand that every day is not plain sailing, people have outside factors that can impact their daily lives. We would never want our colleagues to suffer in silence, this is why we have a team of Emotional Health and Wellbeing Ambassadors to offer support and point you in the right direction of any additional help if you need it.
